In the universe of Saint Seiya, the Goddess Athena is the protector of humanity. Every 243 years, she reincarnates to fight against hostile gods who want to conquer or even destroy the world. Accompanying her are her chosen warriors called "Saints," who gather around their main base of "Sanctuary" and listen to the commander of her armies, the "Pope." They wear a special form of armor called "cloths," based on the 88 constellations in the sky. The battles they fight against other Gods are called "Holy Wars" and the biggest one is the Holy War against Hades, God of the Dead. It is one that would leave many Saints and sometimes even Athena herself dead for the price of sealing Hades away for 243 years, enough for Athena to reincarnate again and begin the process anew.

During the 18th century, Athena's incarnation is a girl called Sasha. She was born to a devoutly religious, but poor couple in the slums of an Italian city. She also had an older brother named Alone who, unknown to anyone, is the reincarnation of Hades in this era. Their parents died when Alone was a child and Sasha was barely more than a toddler, leaving them to the care of the local orphanage run by nuns. Though Alone was a responsible older brother who took care of Sasha, he was also overly kind-hearted, leaving him vulnerable to being bullied by other children. As a result, Sasha had to protect him, even if she too was too kind to do anything other than shield him from blows.

The two later gained a better protector--a half-Japanese boy named Tenma who had somehow drifted to their city. At first, he was a loner who would often run off to be by himself, but Sasha persuaded him that she and Alone both considered him family. After that, he was constantly with the siblings and Alone, entranced by his passion, became his best friend. Tenma was stronger and quicker to violence than either Sasha or Alone, so it became his task to beat up the bullies who would threaten the siblings.

A while after Tenma came to the city, the nuns who ran the orphanage also died, leaving the orphans on their own. They were moved to decaying houses outside the city walls. Shortly after this, a Gold Saint charged with finding Athena to bring her to Sanctuary in preparation for the upcoming Holy War, Sagittarius Sisyphus, found Sasha. He begged her to come with him to fulfill her destiny of becoming Athena and protecting the Earth. Sasha agreed with him because she wanted the protect the peace and happiness of all humanity, though it pained her to leave her brother and her friends. On her last day in Italy, she made flower bracelets for the three of them so they could remain connected in some way until they were able to meet again.

Once she arrived at the Sanctuary, she began training to become Athena, learning to awaken her cosmos. Though she still tried to accept her destiny, she was a normal young girl and the weight of the burden placed upon her to act as goddess and lead her Saints to victory in the Holy Wars started giving her doubts. Though the Pope and the Sagittarius Saint tried to keep her safe and aloof from the rest of the Sanctuary, she would sneak down into the Temples of the other Gold Saints and, in the case of Scorpio Gaiden, even outside of the Sanctuary itself. She was not content to remain an aloof, high-and-mighty goddess, but wanted to bond with the Saints under her command.

Personality:
As the incarnation of the goddess Athena, Sasha is wise and mature beyond her years. She has a kind heart that cares for and sympathizes with everyone she meets. Even the suffering of her enemies can move her to tears. She is very keen when it comes to noticing a person's emotional pain, such as when she noticed that Kardia seemed lonely. Once she notices someone is suffering, she always does her best to comfort them.

Abilities: Like her Saints, Sasha can use her cosmo. However, she uses it to heal and to seal away hostile gods, not to fight. As a goddess, her cosmo is massive compared to the cosmo of regular humans. However, since she is a child, she is unable to use her cosmo for a longer duration of time. Without the use of her cosmo, she is only as strong as any other child her age.
